Oh, man, The Spam Allstars are playing this week at a club in Jupiter, Fla., a couple of miles from my brother’s house. If we weren’t in the middle of the semester, I’d be on the next plane south.
I got hooked on the band back in 2004 when it released “Contra Los Roboticos Mutantes.” The album’s centerpiece, “La Vida Continua,” settles into a sweet Latin soul groove that’s kept me swaying for the better part of a decade. But it’s the playful “The Robot’s Attack” that really gets me jacked up. The horn section seduces listeners while the rhythm section, laying down a barrage of funky beats, dares them not to dance. Then again, you could say that about most of the tracks.
Guess I’ll be planning a visit to see my brother this summer.
